Wetlands International (WI) in Bihar and Jharkhand for Bird Census

Wetlands International (WI) undertakes the bird census work in more than 100 countries every year and provides information on the global state of the birds and analyzes changes in their population. Recently the team was in Bihar and Jharkhand, though there were severe cold conditions this year. The purpose was to count the birds visiting these wetlands as a whole and species wise as well. These data, after due verification, would be sent to the Wetlands International (WI).

The wetlands being covered under the Asian Waterbirds Census Programme by Wetlands International (WI) in Bihar and Jharkhand are — Kajra Dhar, Eco Park, Kawar Lake, Gogabeel, Kusheshwarsthan, Saraiya Maun, Vikramsila Gangetic Dolphin Sanctuary and Jagatpur Lake in Bihar and Udhuwa Lake Bird Sanctuary, Topchanchi Lake, Chand Shahar Lake and Chharwa Dam in Jharkhand. The data collection work would be done till the end of this month and the census report would be ready by February.

This data will help to assess the trend regarding the total number of birds in different wetlands as well as about the trend regarding number of birds of different species.  It will also help in identifying the bird species whose numbers show declining trend.

The present practice of collecting field data from pre-identified wetlands in a professional manner in Bihar and Jharkhand is just three years old and earlier the bird census work was not done in a very systematic manner.
