Team building exercises have become predominant buzz word of the corporate world. The concept of the team building exercise comes from the Armed forces and most of the team building events that we come across are nothing but improvisation of the exercises which are part and parcel of the life in Armed forces. The basic premise is that the forces consist of person who can work successfully as a team. If the same team exercise is done by common people, they would be able to work successfully as a team.
However, there is little substance in this thought as armed forces belong to different genre and drawing any parallel with the corporate world would be presumptuous. In forces, the physical strength and ability of facing stiff physical challenges is very important, but in corporate world it has little significance and specially defence force like strength is not at all required. But in recent times there are certain organizations that are brazenly following the team building exercises of forces. Just imagine 50 years old CEO performing very badly in an event which demands high level of physical strength and stamina, most probably he will become butt of joke for those who love to spend most of their working time near coffee machine. If we believe in Halo and Horn effect, the CEO will loose his reputation in the office because of the Horn Effect. In fact the good idea for senior staff would be that they should avoid such team building exercises, otherwise they might end up getting sidelined by their own team.
