Lecturer in History

What is History?

History is the chronological record in black and white, documentation of events as well as the events themselves—contemporary events are always disconnected occurrences but history creates connectivity when the present becomes past. History is a discipline—a branch of knowledge that uses specific techniques and paraphernalia to achieve its goals. To assemble a history, records are needed. Some of these are on paper records: government papers, diaries, letters, inscriptions, biographies, and many others. For ancient history, particularly of the Middle East and China, there are record of kings, of wars, and of significant events such as the building of temples or natural disasters. Archaeology uncovers many of these records. In the modern period written records are much easier to obtain. Governments and other institutions keep records of nearly everything they do.

The contemporary discipline of historiography or history writing, developed as lately as the 19th century. It surfaced in Germany, first at the University of Göttingen, then at other schools. Progressively, the German sway extended to the rest of Europe and the United States. In the wake of the German resolution to take a methodical and scientific approach to history there lies the thousands of years of know-how of different societies in dealing with history.
