NKN , National Knowledge Network is going to be established by Indian Government to connect all educational institutions. It is going to be implemented by National Informatics Centre (NIC) by 2012. About 1500 knowledge institutions are going to be connected through NKN.
NKN initiative can be backbone of country’s R&D and prolifliration of knowledge. one cannot compare NSFNET of US as private people then took over with best services. This NKN is much more than that. It high speed hub initiates the spreading of research activities in Indian labs and universities which was not there till now. This sharing of the resources will boost our quest for knowledge and make India a powerful hub of knowledge society
WHAT PURPOSE IS SERVED BY NKN IF IT IS PROPOSED TO DEPLOY A BACKBONE LIKE NSFNET BEFORE IT WAS DECOMMISSIONED WITH ONSET OF COMMERCIAL INTERNET? I FIND IT EXACT REPLICA OF 1990S’ ARCHITECTURE WITH SEVERAL CORE BACKBONES LIKE FOR RBI DEFENCES TELECOM ISP STPI NICNET WITH THEIR SEPARATE POLICIES FOR REGIONAL WANS LIKE FOR BANKS SWANS EDUNETS AGRINETS AND WHATNOT THAT STILL REQUIRE MULTIPLE INSITU INTERNET GATEWAYS. DOES ANYONE QUESTION SUCH PROFLIGACY WITHOUT ANY OF RATIONÀLES TOO ADVANCED FOR INTERCONNECTIVITY AT NEUTRAL EXCHANGE POINTS AND COMMERCIAL APPLICATIONS ONLY AVAILABLE ON GLOBAL INTERNET? THE NEED IS FOR CONSOLIDATION WITH PUBLIC INTERNET’S PROGRESSION & LOCAL PRESENCE ON HIGH SPEED LINKS CABLES& EXCHANGES.
