India is a country where rote learning is given preference over original thinking. Almost all the competitive examinations are designed in such a manner that students who have undergone rote learning at coaching institutes have decisive edge over the students who haven’t done any sort of coaching. If an in depth value analysis is done coaching is always a logical option over traditional self study; at least in Indian conditions.
Some of the questions that always come in the mind of aspirants for IAS regarding coaching institutes are mentioned below:
Is coaching really necessary?
If you have ever gone through the syllabus of UPSC you should not be asking this question? The whole syllabus of optional and compulsory papers is of such character that the knowledge of the whole world might seem inadequate to get success in this examination. However, if proper strategy is formulated then aspirants can make the whole preparation process easy by leaving the topics which are irrelevant and rarely touched in the exams. You can formulate the strategy by appearing in the UPSC preliminary exam or you can get the real success strategy from Coaching Institutes. If you try to formulate the strategy on your own more than likely you would not get success in your first attempt. It is the choice of the aspirant, if he wants to become a strategy expert or get success in the exam.
Where you can come across good Coaching Institutes?
Most of the good coaching institutes are located in Delhi. However, there are several others of equal value and status in Pune and Tiruanantpuram.
Postal or Regular Coaching, which one is better?
It depends on your style of study. But experience says that if you have opportunity of studying at good coaching institutes with decent faculties then opt for it without any second thought. But in case if you are not aware of any decent coaching institute in your vicinity then better opt for postal or online coaching.
How to check the quality of faculty?
Only those faculties can help you in crossing the hurdle of UPSC who are well aware of the question pattern. It would be better to study under those instructors who have got decent success in UPSC exams. Avoid learning from below par teachers or university teachers who are expert in the subject but are not aware of current trends.
If you are studying at Coaching Institute then how much time you must allocate for self study?
You must make it a habit to repeat and comprehend everything that is taught at the coaching institute. Besides that you must also try to find current trends in the optional subject you are studying.
