CBSE Grading System Analysis : More Drama and Less Education

The newfound love with the grading system doesn’t seem to end anywhere. First the Board decided to do away with the conventional examination system and now they want to award grades to the students on the basis of attitude towards fellow students, teachers and environment. It is a well known fact in the world of psychology that any system which is used to check the attitude of a person in a restricted and formal environment never yields the right result. It is highly likely that the students in higher classes might restrict their real attitude, just to get higher grades. There can be diversion in the opinion of teachers who are from different backgrounds. A specific attitude might be considered as sign of progress if a teacher belongs to a Metro city but the same attitude can be judged negatively by a teacher in rural areas. The worse victims are going to be the students who are wards of central government employees who are often transferred from one place to another. Obviously we might see variable attitude measurement for the same student by different teachers. There was a time when we used to respect the students who were able to get first division in their matriculation or secondary board examination but now we doubt the competency of even those students who get 90 percent and plus marks.

The fact is that we Indians are in love with the concept of approval and recognition. Our leaders and education policy makers are well aware of this fact and just to satisfy each and every student and his parents they come out with the formulas which will make it tougher to discriminate between intelligent and not so intelligent. It can be dilution of examination syllabus or examination pattern, which results in even ordinary students getting more than 90 percent marks, ironically in the same 90 percent plus category significant number of students are really intelligent but they can’t be recognized as they get lost in the haze and hullabaloo of the students who get marks by artificial training ie. Coaching or tuitions, question banks, guess papers and above all cheating.

Our policymakers are too busy grading the performance of others, what we need is a scale which can grade the overall performance and personality of our corrupt politicians, top government officers, businessmen who are siphoning off the resources of our country.
