The overall trend of employment has been positive for the last fiscal of 2009-2010. According to the Economic Survey about 5 lakh people got jobs during July-September, 2009 over June 2009. However, during the previous quarter of April-June 2009 employment declined by 1.31 lakh . These declarations are conclusion of the fourth quarterly quick employment survey launched in the third week of October 2009. This survey, information was collected from 2873 units by covering 21 centres spread across 11 States/UTs. Eight sectors, namely textiles, leather, metals, automobiles, gems & jewellery, transport, IT/BPO and handloom/powerloom were covered.
Of the seven sectors which were researched all have shown growth in employment barring leather secto have shown growth in July-September, 2009 over June 2009. On the contrary, during April-June 2009 quarter all sectors, except leather, automobiles and handloom/powerloom, experienced a decrease in employment, probably due to seasonality.
In terms of employment generation textiles (3.18 lakh) leads the pack followed by followed by metals (0.65 lakh) and gems & jewellery (0.58 lakh) for the quarter of July-September 2009 . However, the same sectors according to the quarterly survey for the period April-June 2009 had
shown decline in employment.
It is the non exporting sector which has shown tremendous improvement in employment trends However the trend is positive in the exporting sector is also poistive where total employment for the quarter stood at 2.04 lakhs.
